Thanks for the feedback guys and gals but may I expand on what I need -to be
clearer..

What I need is a set of font characters that have the basic alphabet but
also has those smilies that are on wingdings as well. In addition....
So for example I need A-Z : ; ( ) & % $ £ " ! ? / , . -AND THEN
'smilies' ( say when you hit the chevrons < and > for happy and frown)
I have actionscript code that goes thru a string and replaces one character
with another say ':)' is replaced with '*' for now..

I feel as if I have dug the channel tunnel from France and also from England
but the two ends that need to join are a mile apart.
