Actually I think in some cases that the speed limits are indeed wrong,
there are roads at which I think the limit is way too high and other
roads when I think that it is way too low, but of course these limits
are variable depending on prevailing conditions.
There is a need to impose a limit on roads, but unless the limit is
shown by electronic signs and vary depending on time of day, traffic
levels, location, temperature and weather conditions then there will
never be a limit for a type of road which is actually sensible for all
roads of that type.
When I drive between Edinburgh and Aberdeen most of the journey is dual
carriageway and motorway - in the past I have been know to drive for at
least an hour and not get passed by or overtake another vehicle or have
one within braking distance, under those kind of circumstances and
assuming good weather it would be ludicrous to say that 70mph is fine,
but that 71, 72 or 73 is not. However on a very busy motorway I would
also argue perhaps that even 70 is too fast at times!.
Not saying that there is a reasonable and cost effective solution but do
think that there are worse problems that should be addressed rather than
the further vilification of the motorist.
