Big wide roads should never be built. This is where the engineering
factor comes into it. I can think of two roads off the top of my head,
one here in Scotland (the Annan bypass) and one in Somerset (the
Illminster? bypass) that are big and wide and horrendous accident
blackspots.

Roads should be kept standard width, or made into dual carriageways
IMHO. The problem I've seen on these two roads is that because each
carriageway is just about wide enough for two cars, people will overtake
in the face of oncoming traffic. All you need is for two people to be
doing this at the same time which I've seen many, many times and one
error in judgement results in a collision speed of over 150mph.

The government need to realise that road safety needs to be a
multi-faceted campaign. Just targetting speeding and drink driving will
not safe roads make.
