Microsofts .NET team has actually given the Mono team quite a lot of
assistance, and they do have the BSD port to reference. The project builds
its implementation from the ECMA standards.
Mono is mature enough that developers are trying it out - 1% of ASP.NET
sites were hosted on Linux not so long back (according to Netcraft).
The place I think Java has a strangle hold is mobiles, phone games are
probably going to be dominated by Java for quite a while.
