Now I see what you mean a bit better, I had another go at this, and came
up with this:

which might be closer to what you want. Not perfect, because the text
doesn't flow around the table, the centre of the table might not be
exactly in the middle vertically, and the table stays centered even when
you scroll the page. Should work with most reasonably recent browsers.
