That's fine expect I was told by an admittedly inexperienced Lufthansa check
in girl that I HAD to check in my laptop in and would NOT be permitted to
bring it on board as carry on luggage and then worst of all they then
dropped it and broke it..... Took me ages to persuade them that it was there
fault!

Fine, except that:
"You must not include in checked baggage ... computers, electronic devices,
..."
So it has to be carried on.
