Only guessing but you may have been able to do a "System Restore" also
in safe mode but it sounds like its flat lined...

I've installed XP several times over installs that wouldn't boot.
Worked
every time for me, I just went through the normal install routine and
then
when asked if I wated to recover an existing installation, I chose that
and
it all came to life.
