I too use DWMX (is that what we should call it?) and I despair at how it
doesn't do what it says on the tin.
I have given up trying to use include files or library's for stuff like nav
bars, especially if they are defined with templates.
It can seriously - and one way only - screw up an entire site.
Also if I want to include stuff before the such as tests for login
etc tag it complains.
It only partially seems to work with PHP and Phakt isn't much better. The
code it produces is horrible, and if you change it
it sometimes, but not always, overwrites what it thinks you need. Simple
database work is OK, but for more complex stuff, reach for Notepad (or vi)
Don't even get me started on table layout.....
But you're right, what's the real alternative? FrontPage (Ha Ha Ha Ha...)
