RE: FN-FORUM: Firewall's ... Again (Thanks)
date posted 25th June 2003 14:40
I would recommend IPCOP at ipcop.sourceforge.net over SmoothWall if your
after an open source firewall. Just mainly so you don't get all the
advertising in your face when administering via the web ;-)
IPCop is pretty much exactly the same as SmoothWall other than the =
adverts
are taken out, if you want a commercially supported firewall then =
SmoothWall
Corporate is the way to go.
As well as firewall IPCop gives you DHCP server, Proxy Cache, Intrustion
Detection and VPN facilities.
Yes, IPCop is easy to set up, takes about 6 minutes to do the initial
install, just follows the docs on the site.

Just a quick thanks to the guys who replied promptly to my post.
I've looked at the Smoothwall site and it seems ideal, also, if it's
true what they say in the blurb "easily set up by a novice" .. Then I'm
laughing :)
It'll finally find a use for this PII that I'm constantly tripping over
too, I'm using it as a doorstop at the moment.
Thanks again,
Tony Jones
