RE: FN-FORUM: Ipcop vs smoothwall
date posted 25th June 2003 17:14
Dave,
I started out a long time ago with Smoothwall certainly pre version 1.0, and
I was part of the discussion around what was required etc... One of the
problems that was occurring with Smoothwall at that time was a slow down in
speed over time when using ADSL modems (and in particular the Alcatel Frog)
There was also the problem where certain people developing smoothwall wanted
to move to a commercial product. So a branch in the code occurred with the
smoothwall group proceeding to develop a commercial version (while providing
limited support for their 'free' version) The IPCOP version was developed to
fix the ADSL problem and also to ensure a 'free' version was continued.
So to answer your question, IPCOP is probably the route to go if you want to
follow the open source route and if you want a commercial version go down
the smoothwall route...

Subject: FN-FORUM: Ipcop vs smoothwall
Having started with smoothwall yesterday, the experts have now confused
my choice!
Is anyone here actually using the current stable release of ipcop
(1.3.0)?
Smoothwall 2.0 (beta) has had a couple of recommendations from happy
users, so I downloaded that first.
Which is the better long term bet for the small corporate LAN?
