1) Connect to the net via a hardware gateway/router. At the very least this
will give you NAT which is a very good place to start.
2) If you want a more substantial firewall you can either buy suitable
hardware - probably combined with the above - (watch out for licensing/costs)
or find an old or very cheap PC, add two network cards and stuff either IPCOP
or Smoothwall on it (not hard).
Let the server be a server.
