You're a lucky fellow.
Most places I've worked in the business drives the whole thing, with final
say as to what goes on to live servers being done by deployment teams.
What tends to happen is that the developers 'in the middle' just get
squashed. The fact that one of the fellows I currently work with refers to
himself as an 'Extreme Code Monkey' is probably indicative of what most
developers feel.
I have offered opinions, advice and suggestions but am usually told 'We have
it in hand - go away and develop stuff'. We do deliver good systems, but I
and most of the other experienced developers who've worked on my current
project are VERY aware of the fact that deep in the system are some nasty
little intermittent bugs that will almost certainly never be fixed due to
time constraints.
