have to agree with Nick. everyone's happy to help, i believe, but a large
percentage of people seem to be asking stuff over and over and over again,
like the group's some kind of... assistant, to do stuff for people. this is
fine, of course, but eventually everyone will wise up to this and not help,
realising that their help is earning someone else money. it's fine when the
chips are down and the stress is high and you need a very quick answer to
something very involved (and all the way up, i guess), but it's just...
just... becoming a deja-vu thing on the forum.
i know for a fact that there are people on here asking us how to do things,
and these people are claiming to be able to do these things for potential
clients. eek, as they say. so, someone gets a client by claiming they can do
something they cannot, then they get us to do the learning for them, then
take the clients money because the client doesnt know any different and web
folk are like plumbers on a lot of occasions, arent they? ("Whats that? Your
websites not working?, Well, that'll be £15000 call out charge then £25000
per hour. It's the flooble in the dabbleywong that's not working.", "Um, OK,
Mr Webmaster"). hmmm. something not quite right there, in my book.
www.google.com. go, try it. it ALWAYS has the answer to "how does this code
work" questions, or "how do i set this up on my windows machine" and almost
anything internet site related. i have yet to not find an answer to question
on google.
for discussion though, google's not good. "Where can i get good business
cards?" may not be the best thing to ask google... but the group have been
good with providing suggestions for queries such as this.
what the forum really really needs is a FAQ, in my honest opinion. but then
again, does it when Google has all the answers to all the FAQs?
this is not meant to be personal at all, or implying a clique exists with
the forum (which i don't think it does?). would be great to see people
suggesting methods and places where people can find the answers instead of
giving the answers which then encourages the people that want things now
without no effort. hats off to Nick for stepping up and making the
suggestion.
/me grabs flame-retardent suit...

hope everyone had a good weekend :)
