Joe, I suspect you're right, which just further highlights how the artists
are screwed nearly as much as the public - and I'm not really talking about
myself, (barely an amoeba never mind a small fish in a teeny pond) but many
bands who sell a half decent amount, and still make no money after all the
record company charges. Obviously there have to be safeguards from the
record co. point of view, but for it to be illegal for me to make a copy of
my own record to play in the car, for example, seems harsh.
On the up side, the proliferation of affordable, studio quality recording
Hardware/Software opens up a world of possibilities - with cheap online
advertising and distribution, and the fragmentation of the previously
compartmentalised pop/rock/folk/classical music market, perhaps the RC's
will ultimately shoot themselves in the foot with too much regulation and
unrealistic prices.
We live in hope ;-)
