We did this last year for a French client
You are right individuals may not register a .fr
You have to have a registered company in France in order to have a .fr
domain and the forms you fill in for the domain registration are thorough
asking for the company's siret (registration) number, you can see
http://www.afnic.asso.fr/ for info
It is not, I don't think possible for a company in the UK to have a.fr
domain registered by another company as the domain must be attached to the
regsitrant (French company) and they must prove by copy of ID card or
residence permit and a recent (i.e. not older than 3 months) proof of
residence in France (phone or electricity bill...)..
