RE: FN-FORUM: EU seeks to Destroy EU IT jobs
date posted 7th August 2003 22:23
Its been happening for ages I am afraid and the SME's are all too aware of
the cost advantages of foreign programmers and web builders. We have used a
bloke, ASP and SQL guru, in South Africa who charges just £5/hr which is
very nice. But we have also used UK people, for £25/hr for onsite stuff. We
are an SME about as SME as you can get in fact.
I think the reality of the situation is that like IBM and Digital Equipment
back int he 80s when everyone started building PCs, change the tack and
retrain for something else. Realise that the tide is coming, and see how you
can make money from this change rather than try and resist it. Its a bummer
but well its gonna happen.

But thats precisely the point FTV's will become irrelevant as anyone with IT
skills will automatically be eligable to work here whether for code monkey
work or more senior positions. IT will be the only services sector that
will be a completely open market, so that EU companies can benefits from
lower IT costs.
This will effect all of us permie's, freelancers, contractors, the works.
At the moment there is at least some government pretense of controlling the
flow of workers coming in, this and the effects of EU enlargement will open
the floodgates.
I for one do not want to be coding for NMW.
