with WS_FTP did you try enabling the 'allow deletion of non-empty folders'
check box in 'Options | Program Options?
that should sort it although it may only be available on the Pro version.

Use something like the excellent SmartFTP, which will go through and delete
all files and subdirectories in a directory for you before deleting the
directory itself. It really is an awesome...
