Hi John,
Use something like the excellent SmartFTP, which will go through and delete
all files and subdirectories in a directory for you before deleting the
directory itself. It really is an awesome FTP client for Windows (that's
free for non-commercial use) and I wouldn't dream of using anything else
these days!
