Re: FN-FORUM: What a shame !

Well I am normally one of the people that charge absolute peanuts.
Normally because altohough I am proficient, Im not as good as some people!
I moderate on a site called Flashkit and see a lot of designers come and go,
mainly kids at the moment, and some of the sites that these people are
churning out can range from pure garbage done in Namo and whatnot, to really
slick usable designs - and this is from people under 16.
The only think I dont like about sending in quotes first is because not all
breifs actually state what is needed.
If a company wants a full site - example:
we need a full 10 page site - 2 destinctive styles - one for the main index
and one or two styles for subcontent.
Please send us your best price.
I want to know - do they have a set logo? Is that needed?
Do they want interactivity via Flash? Any dynamics needed (and if they are
then I duck out there!), e-commerce etc - you get my point?
People dont state in full what they need.
And if they did you would probably find less people offering quotes - and
the average price would even out, there'd be no top/bottom end of scale
quotations.
Least thats what I think anywho

Subject: FN-FORUM: What a shame !
Most of you will have seen the project post which I put up mistakenly
the other day. Having reposted my project on the project forum, I have
had approximately 50 quotes including some from counties as far as
Vietnam, China, Canada and Russia. These quotes vary in price from £100
to £25,000.
I have had emails from some designers saying that I have to pay huge
fees to get a decent website because other freelance designers don't
know what they are doing ! (no way to do business !) Personally I will
only deal with people in the UK due to the fact that I might need to
have a meeting with them (possibly I should have made this clear in the
brief).
The most disappointing part of this whole experience is that the
majority of people have not even read the brief ! I will not even
consider those who did not answer the question of what a ballpark figure
would be, because not reading the brief does not fill me with confidence
to give a designer the work. I have also had some sarcastic comments
that it is not worth the effort and that the business will fail. Nothing
ventured, nothing gained ?
Work is work, particularly in the current economic climate.
Thanks to all of you who sent quotes, and I hope that one of you gets
the business.
