Re: FN-FORUM: IMAC System Tray for Windows ?!

date posted 11th August 2003 18:07

Hiya,

If you mean the OS X Dock, there are several programs knocking around but
Apple seem to be picking them off one by one. The best one I've found (in
terms of features, CPU time and memory usage) is YzDock, but Apple have
killed that one already, though you can still find downloads if you Google
hard enough. Another good one is MobyDock (http://www.mobydock.tk), which is
a little heavier on resources but has a few features you might find useful
that YzDock is lacking (it will show you all running programs, not just the
ones that you specify). Lastly, there's ObjectDock
(http://www.objectdock.com/) which I haven't tested but looks promising,
though this is a commercial offering whereas the other two are freeware.

I'm running YzDock 0.8.3 at the moment and I'm very happy with it. Since
I've installed it, I hardly find myself using the Start menu at all, though
I still use the task bar to switch betwene running processes. The YzDock
window is auto-hidden at the top of my screen, so I can use it as a program
launcher whenever I need it.

Lastly, if you go down this route, dont forget to go to
http://www.deviantart.com to get your custom program icons to make it all
look gorgeous!

HTH

Steve

Subject: FN-FORUM: IMAC System Tray for Windows ?!

I don 't know if any non-MAC users have seen the latest MAC interface, but
it has this rather nifty 'magnifier' for the task bar/system tray.

In windows if you hover your mouse over an item or icon on the task bar or
system tray you get the boring old alt text come up to tell you what it is
.. on the MAC it performs this rather sexy magnified archway (as if you're
looking through a magnifying glass) - very smooth, very nice.

Anyway, one of the guys in PCWorld (where I saw it) said he believes there's
an add-on out there for XP that does a similar thing (and he also suspects
the next release of Windows will have something similar) .... Anyone know of
anything??!!
