FN-FORUM: Site check (tables)

I'm just starting this website, following someone else's design and I'm
struggling making it work - I hate these kind of designs!

Some sub menus are going over the vertical curved orange and blue bit on
the left so I put it as css background image in the cell and the
horizontal blue and orange strip is supposed to join onto it, but it
doesn't. I've even put a transparent gif in the left cell to try and
secure the width.

Any ideas, or does it look even worse on a PC?
