Hi Hutch,
I too am the "lucky" owner of a DSL504 from D-Link and although when I
first got it it was flaky, unreliable, and generally about as stable as
Maggie Thatcher. The web based control panel sucks too. But after
sorting out the config, which was a real mess, it has settled down and
is now happily connected 24-7 without random disconnections, lockups or
anything odd. I don't understand it but it is now working ok, even in
the 38 degrees (ish) of the week before last. I was going to send it
back at one point but after a Flash BIOS upgrade it's ok now.
As for a recommendation of kit I can only speak from experience with my
last router which was a cable router box from Linksys which I would
happily entrust with my life. It had the nicest config I have seen in
years and worked a charm. Not sure if Linksys do a DSL box but anyway I
like the Linksys kit...
Cheers
George
