RE: FN-FORUM: Microcock / Linux / Ramblings of a fat man

date posted 20th August 2003 16:43

I've been using Red Hat Linux as my development/browsing/server environment
since 1999 and have no probs with it at all (apart from having to do my RPM
upgrades over a dial-up connection thanks to my rural location).

I tend to use Windows/M$-Office for documents and email because in the early
days there were few people using Star Office and it was just easier to be
completely compatable.

I also use Windows boxes for testing any sites I have developed - I have
three with versions 4, 5 and 6 of IE on.

Being a 20 year Unix techie makes me think they're easy and nice to set up -
all possible through the command line - but not everyone agrees with this. I
have a separate Linux server machine which acts as my network gateway
(firewall and everything), file server and print server.

It's nice to be well armed but it's hot and noisy as hell in here when all 5
machines are going at once. Desk clutter is controlled via my trusty KVM.

People whose work is dependant on using applications rather than writing
them might not love Linux so much.
