Without a hub you need to use a cross-over cable.

Subject: FN-FORUM: Networking 2 PCs
Hi all,
I need to network 2 PCs together. Both run Windows 98SE. I was thinking,
all I need is ethernet cards in both, TCP/IP protocol installing with
supporting IP addresses and a CAT 5e cable running from 1 PC to the
other. This would work wouldn’t it? I wouldnt need a router as its only
the two PCs - or do i?
Any help a bonus - thanks
