You mean a GSM modem card, into which he inserts a SIM from a mobile phone?
Or a CompactFlash/SmartMedia/whatever memory card reader (e.g. for a PDA or
digicam)?

The only alternate way (that I'm aware of, at least) of connecting a PCMCIA
card is via a PCI or ISA adapter (which a laptop usually doesn't have).
If he's just after a memory card reader, USB is probably the way to go in
the absence of a PCMCIA slot.
What kind of laptop doesn't come with a PCMCIA slot though?
