Re: FN-FORUM: RE: for the MAC guys

hmm.. i just upgraded my three Macs to panther and have had no
problems whatsoever.
every mac has retained it's users folder, system settings and
application preferences...
this looks more like a case of ppl messing about where they shouldn't -
the most stupid thing to do is backup your files to an external hard
drive and then replace with that once panther is installed.
panther is a brand new system and uses a new system architecture,
therefore the encoding of many files has changed, so when they are
replaced from your backed up folders panther will not be able to
recognize them properly.
the ideal install / upgrade path is:
1) upgrade your existing system to panther using that upgrade option
in the installer, selecting 'retain user settings'
2) if you want a fresh installation and not an upgrade, then do an
'archive and install' installation on your newly upgraded system
this will create a brand new panther system, and archive your user
folder (that are now encoded properly after running that first upgrade
step)
3) you can then happily transfer back any personal data you need in the
new system from the archive folder
i really hate it when people blame computers for their own stupidity.
the upgrade path i detailed above is very clearly explained in the
panther installation!! (including the information about file
enoding...)
grrr!!
