FN-FORUM: Win 2k Server machine fallen over (no IIS no event viewer)
date posted 1st January 2004 17:47
Hi & a happy new year to all
I am having problems with a Win 2000 Server machine which serves websites.
Yesterday it was restarted and after this all the websites went offline.
If you go to Internet Information Services all sites are shown as Stopped.
Choosing Restart IIS gives "The service has not been started."
The Services list (start -> settings -> control panel -> administrative
tools) does not include "Event Log" (or indeed Event anything).
Attempting to start Event Viewer (from Administrative Tools window) gives
"Unable to complete the operation on 'System Log'. The interface is
unknown."
Typing "net start eventlog" into a command window (DOS prompt) to start the
event log that way produces "the service name is invalid."
Typing "net start w3svc" (to start IIS) into a command window produces "The
World Wide Web Publishing Service could not be started. A system error has
occurred. System error 1717 has occurred. The interface is unknown."
Other services: IIS Admin Service is started. Remote Procedure Call is
started. Remote Procedure Call Locator is started.
Simple DNS runs on the machine, this appears to be running OK.
The hard disc is not full (4 GB+ available). A disc check is fine.
Have restarted the machine many times.
There is a file "eventlog.dll" in c:\winnt\system32\ (size 47kB)
The server has a fixed IP address on the internet which is pinging back OK
when testing from outside the network.
The server can get to other external internet sites without a problem.
System properties reports:
Microsoft Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack 4
Windows Update site gives no critical updates required.
Lots of Google searching is giving me things to try (hence the rather odd
mixture of info I have given above) but alas no solution as yet.
Ideas would be appreciated. I am not by the PC as I type but am looking for
a list of things to try when I next visit it (probably tomorrow).
Many thanks for any input.
Paul, hoping today's events are not a sign of things to come this year.
