hmm well this as me laughing my ass off....
okay so.

Xbox runs win2k kernel and core.
Linux ( not linus !) is not to be found anywhere on the (unmodded) Xbox
but if you care to Mod it then you'll get linux on it.

Generally dashupdate.xbe is shipped on most disks, since if you copy a
disk to the Hard Drive ( you need to mod the XBox ) youl see it go over.

the whole OS is never reshipped on the Disks to date. since updating the
operating system requires more effort than just assuming its going ot be
there.

If you do get the chance buy a xbox, mod it ( www.baldbouncer.co.uk )
update the bios and reinstall the dash software (Evox is my choice ) now
you can copy your own Xbox games to the installed hard drive ( you'll
want to update the drive from 10gb to 120+Gb) and play them from their.
Which means no chance of having a damage xbox game.

The Modded Xbox is a wonderful store of movies films and games meaning
you can backup your films ( finally ) and reduce the worry of damaging
them.

There is no GPL code on the original Xbox although teh TCPIP stack uses
some basic BSD stuff but then the BSD license allows for even this.

The Xbox is more than capable of running Graphics , irrespective of the
operating system since its the graphics card not the OS that drives
that.
