RE: FN-FORUM: PHP-Mysql-Linux vs ASP-MS SQL Server-Win2000

Yeah I agree. It's rare to a post as detailed as that, and generally
unbiased as well.
Quick mention about JSP(Java). It's also free. When combined with Java
Servlets it can help ease development by seperating the presentation of
data, to it's calculation/extraction. (NB - not saying you can't do
this in other languages ;). =20
It's multi platform. Linux or MS operating systems are no problem.
It does require an extra component to run though, a servlet engine.
This can be free i.e. with Apache's Tomcat - which has a large
community. Obviously extra components require extra resources on your
server though, both in terms of CPU usage / memory, and in terms of
project setup. They're not considerable but can cost.
It can be a more scaleable platform than say PHP. i.e. use of EJBs, etc
- not saying this does make it more scaleable though.
To me there are a lot more PHP freebies around. Not saying there aren't
any free downloads for Java though, they just tend to be more Tool based
as oppossed to end user based.
I think to get the most out of Java it does take more development time.
I can knock up something in PHP or ASP a lot quicker, but when I've done
the equivalent in Java I feel I have a much more maintainable solution.
So for very large scale apps I'd go for a Java.
Anyways that's all just personal opionion. Sitting here on my MS
Operating System, and using Outlook I must admit to an anti-microsoft
bias. I havn't had enough experience of .NET to cast an opinion. (
It's a particulary big flame war the whole Java vs .NET debate); it's
certainly possible to do anything in .NET that Java can do.
Some links :-
http://java.sun.com - For Java Development Kit (JDK) downloads, info on
JSP and Servlets.
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/index.html - For information &
downloads on Tomcat.

Anyways hopefully I've skirted round things enough to not cause any
flame wars ;)
Have a good weekend=20
