thanks everyone for your help. It's finally working (somehow).

Chris's comments about iconv were useful especially, but I think a
proper rebuild was what really did it, along with careful studying of

merely 24 hours later and I've now got sablotron & php 4.3 (err but
lost a few other modules).. who said linux was for techies?? :)
