Suggestion one: give us some information to work with ;-)
1) Which games?
2) What are the failure messages, if any?
3) Does the router allow for port-forwarding and/or 1:1 NAT?
4) Are you running a software firewall, and if so, what?
If you're behind a NAT router then you won't be able to act as a
"server" or "host" for a game unless you open the relevant ports and
forward them to the relevant machine.
You can normally connect to most server-based games without altering
router settings, but it's possible the router is getting in the way,
or a software firewall is.
If you're trying to do a direct connect game (e.g. for something like
pool, where one person hosts the game and the other connects direct to
their machine, rather than hooking up to a central server as you would
normally for Quake/Unreal type stuff) then you may need to open some
ports even if you're the client, and the host certainly will - have
they?
etc. etc.
Cheers,
Pete
