Thanks for every ones support and comments, the girlfriend wasn't happy to start with she's got a BA and currently doing her Masters (she's a teacher) but can see I'm now a lot happier and stress free...

oops - I had just spotted the problem it was the "str &" in the first line - ahhhh. The previous delete statement was in the str. I should have known - it isn't the first place the original coder had...
