We were recommended to take a peek at the dell outlet store:

(for some reason giving me javascript errors at the mo)

We picked up a nice couple of (basic but just what we needed) laptops
from there for £700 a piece. I won't presume to be able to recommend
the best models to go for, as we just needed something for coding work,
which hardly needs a powerhouse. Ours were inspiron 510m, and we're
happy with them.
