Based on personal experience (I work in a laptop repair shop).
Go for tier-1 brands: Toshiba, IBM, Compaq.
Dell - is tier1, quite good, but bits fall off them.
IBM Thinkpads - I think these are great but they're an arse to get
working if they go wrong.
Sony - do nice gagety laptops.. they are cool when they work but parts
are a pain.
Never touch compaq presarios. Compaq Armadas are the best, followed by Evos.
If you want a really reliable laptop for corporate use. - Get the best
Toshiba Tecra model you can afford.
Beware of badged-up tier-2 models... Acer, Advent, Notebook, HP (HP is
also Compaq but are geared more to home users.), Higrade, Packard-Bell etc..
