It was in response to all of the "You can't bundle stuff with your operating
system". They through their toys out of the pram and removed java support.

There is a bit more to it than that and all tied up with the fact they added
extra functionality to their Virtual Machine and Sun didn't like it so they
dropped it completely.

There was a statement about it on the MS web site (I looked into it for
someone once) and what they said seamed reasonable, from their point of
view.
