ahh yeah - the way you are seeing it in Safari et al is the way it
always intended to look - and was only working properly in IE5 on mac
(strangely!)
the white swoosh and nav was always meant to be above everything - i
had to fiddle with how i made the head and shoulder pics appear. seems
that using position relative or absolute immediately made them appear
above everything - z-Index not having any effect here as the head and
shoulder pics are in a separate DIV to the navigation items and
'swoosh' graphic...
i fixed it now by having the head pics positioned via margin and
padding - which seems to be working in all modern browsers.

yep, that is a problem... i tried using min-width instead of width on
the nav bars - but it doesn't appear to work as it says on the tin...
cheers for the nit picking - it can really help drive a thing forward
when someone points out its failings :-D
