Have a look at the Mazda 3 - excellent cars that are cheap to service
and run and they look reasonably nice for a jap too!!
Also have a look at the Skoda's - new hot hatch Fabia is actually a
diesel and beat a mini cooper around Top Gear's track!!!
You won't get any discount at a Skoda dealer, they'll offer things in
lieu (boot liners etc) so buy online, saved myself a grand and still
got loads of goodies on my Octavia vRS.
If you don't like the Fabia then consider the Seat version, the Leon,
very nice cars too.
Skoda and Seat are part of the Audi-VW group and the build quality is good.
