Hmmm...
(disclosure: its an extension to the Torbytes system
http://www.torbytes.co.uk)
the image A uploaded (by ftp atm) becomes item 1. they can add multiple
descriptions to item 1 at present.
what I want to do is (as you suggest) have only one image A, but I'm
finding it hard to picture the process of creating item 1 referencing
image A then days later creating item 100 that also references image A,
but have the filesystem create new thumbnails. The image file reference
helps with file identification for archive purposes.
e.g I photograph a vase in a museum collection.
I upload it as item 1 vase with rose decoration in the pottery theme,
various people add descriptive interpretation to the vase attached to item
1 - how it was made, where it was sold, etc - all to allow the vase to
appear in different subthemes...
Later, someone discovers the vase belonged to Lennie Henry. I want to
add the picture to my lennie henry theme. which requires me to create a
new item record.
I know the original file name, I don't know the item it was stored under...
supposing I store the original file on the server, with both the original
filename reference in the item record and the random coded upload filename
(to avoid overwriting by duplication) The web assets will be produced
from the original, I can have a search facility to find the original
filename in the database and then use the uploaded original to create new
coded web image files.
That might work.
What do you think?
