The G refers to generation of PPC chip AFAIK & the PPC chip is the
culmination of AIM (Apple, IBM, Motorola) which dissolved some time back.

For copywriting a mac is fine. Word supported. Acrobat works fine as
well.
One of our copywriters uses a clamshell ibook. Lower spec than the
Pismo.
