Asus motherboards every time for single CPU here.

If his PC is way, way old bear in mind that an AT power supply and
case is no good for ATX motherboards, which is what he'll be getting
now.

On the CPU front things to bear in mind are:

AMD
- just slashed the Athlon 64 prices
- just put the Athlon XP prices up loads
- introduce the Sempron range (their new 'value' line)
officially this week, pricing TBA but will be competing
at the Celeron through to moderate P4 level

Intel
- about to knock a chunk of their CPU prices next Monday

So, unless you're buying Athlon 64, wait a couple of weeks or so.

In my totally and utterly non-humble opinion it's always best to go
for a solid motherboard (so avoid PC Chips type 'bargains' no matter
how tempting the apparent saving) and decent RAM (Samsung Original,
ATP, Infineon or similar, not Kingston Value). It'll cost a bit more
but is invariably worth it in terms of performance and life span.
