can of worms open ;-)
I think the people directing you towards Mandrake and Suse are probably
going in the right direction I personally don't like rpm based distros
but off the two have had far nicer experiences with Suse.
The best thing to do is discover your nearest linux user group (LUG)
www.lug.org.uk has a nice list of them and see what the users there
use. Beware that most experienced users will use debian, slackware,
gentoo or something else with newbie warnings so take advice with a
pinch of salt.
If you don't want to join a lug near you (perhaps the arsehole count is
too high) you can pretty much sign up for any lug mailing list in the
country and get some free advice. I belong to Wolves LUG and if you
like beer, curry, dirty jokes and perhaps a little linux on the side
that's a good list to join. A good dose of OT posts at about the same
ratio as this one. Most of our users are debian but we have some very
experienced suse and red hat users on board.
SB lug (south birmingham) is another list I subscribe to (they need a
little help in the humour dept. sometimes) and they have a very strong
mandrake bias.
Pretty much any lug you join will have a good list but if the one you
choose isn't either helpful or fun then unsubscribe and find another.
It's all about freedom after all.
I know quite a few people in different lugs so tell em sparkes sent ya.
If it's a cool lug someone will either know me or know of me ;-)
