I'd have to disagree there, it's not a replacement for Windows. Unix
was designed as a server operating system foremost whereas Windows was
designed as a desktop operating system foremost.
Different tools for different jobs (at last for the forseeable
future), IMHO. I run Red Hat 9 on my Laptop, but Windows XP Pro on the
desktop.
Windows has an excellent user interface these days and is well suited
to most users. It also has a veritable treasure trove of available
productivity, development tools and games (due to the monopoly that
Microsoft have). And the registry is a superb idea.
However, Linux is great for server-based applications (Firewall, DNS,
SMTP, POP3, Game servers etc..) and development of course. Mainly due
to the low cost of ownership.
Dress Linux up as you will to make it look like Windows, bundle in
productivity applications, but under the hood it's still a different
beast that came from a different vision.
That's not to say that things won't change in the next five years, and
it will certainly be interesting to see what the future holds.
Just my 10p worth, couldn't resist joining in the debate.
Cheers,
Richard.
