Quark files are just the text & layout with no images hence they are pretty small. Are you sure you are not embedding the images in Illustrator/InDesign. You have to send the images separately if you...

I've only started using Indesign as everywhere I've worked Quark is standard. I don't particularly like Quark (verging on hatred now) and love Indesign, but the file sizes in Quark stay comparitively...
