FN-FORUM: messenger etc for MAC

Are there problems with using messenger, yahoo or such like on the Mac?
I would like a Mac user friend of mine to 'log on' as we speak a lot,
but they seem to think it's not good for the Mac. Was this an old
problem, since rectified, or does it mess things up?
