Sorry been out and missed the comments and I wasn't really clear in the
first post, but thanks for the definitions of notarise and the other
thoughts, but the solicitor can either vouch for you and issue a covering
letter for the bank to cover their own backsides or as has been suggested
pay the cheque through their client account. I know I might be dumb but
surely this ain't rocket science... If they screwed up - they sort it out.
