Just put in a new battery. It should revert to whatever Bios setup it was using originally when it left the factory. If you have
changed any of the settings or flashed the Bios since then, you will need to re-apply those changes. The reverted Bios settings may
be why it won't boot. Otherwise you may have a more fundamental problem with CMOS and motherboard. Ouch!

Is it nasty? I've read that the battery can recover a charge if the PC
is left on for 24 hours, but then what settings do I need to re-enter?
The 'puter is refusing to boot and giving a CMOS checksum error ;-(
