Opps. I'm trying too hard to be a smart Alec.
Well it does depend and a lot of elements how much image information,
range of colours and required size. Depending on your required quality
you could blur it a bit or use the 'Save for Web..' option box which
selectively blur if you use an alpha channel. Also turn off Progressive
and ICC profile this saves a bit of space.
All the other ideas about Gif etc. are great as well. Experimenting
with different dither and limited color pallet help as well.
I wonder if Fireworks will give a better result.
