FN-FORUM: Problem connecting to mysql

I've just setup a new database in mysql using phpMyAdmin, all looks
good, but when I try and connect to it via my php page to add some data
I get the following message:

Warning: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock'

followed by a

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server
through socket '/tmp/ mysql.sock'

I've doubled checked the username, password and domain i'm using so a
little stumped as to what it could be. Any ideas???
