RE: FN-FORUM: Project management software

date posted 14th July 2005 14:03

I've tended to use MS project mainly as a tool to beat clients up to
give me information. I like the phrase "day by day slippage". Tends to
focus the mind...

And putting them in as resources to provide information helps with
keeping them part of the "team" rather than fighting against it.=20

Hi Dai

Project management is a group of techniques and processes when put
together can (if used correctly) predict the flow of time, cost and
resources through a given project. Software such as m$ project is
merely a tool to assist with the tracking of such information.

That said, m$ project is pretty good. Lots of the academics in project
management prefer CA Superproject, construction and petrochem lean
towards primavera. IMO any software you choose will only be as good as
the time you are prepared to invest in learning the quirks of the
package.

I would suggest that reading a book or two on the subject may help and
allow you to assess which software would best suit your needs (along
with giving you ideas on how to best use it).

Regards

Darren

Subject: FN-FORUM: Project management software

Hi all,

Just recently switched from solo working to having a couple of other
employees. As part of trying to get us working well as a team we are
looking at project management software. The obvious place to start as
we have an action pack was MS Project and we have run that up and tried
it on current project. It seems very powerful but equally the learning
curve is a little steep. What I am trying to decide is whether to dive
fully into MS Project and learn how it works or whether to find a
simpler tool to use, either short or long term. =20

Any experience, suggestions etc. would be welcomed.

Dai
