The audio output from a cd/dvd rom comes via a little cable inside direct to
the soundcard. Data comes through the IDE chain.
DVD audio is in the form of data which is uncompressed by the computer and
played through the soundcard. So if its purely CD audio that doesn't work
then its the cable or mix level.
Either the little cable is broken or missing, or something has changed/muted
the mix level of the 'cd audio' in of the soundcard.
